A Soul of Ones Own

Through our reading of Dr. Faust and the various discussions we have had regarding the soul and it's inherent controversy I thought the soul would be a great topic to touch upon. The question is, can one actually sell ones soul? There are actually lists of people on the internet if searched who are accredited with actually having sold their souls, while it may or may not be true it still provokes intrigue. If there is a hell then it makes perfect sense that the devil would actively seek those souls who by their own inherent nature are great and who normally would not wind up in the devil's control. The base reason for this, supported by Dr. Faust, is that the devil wishes to have as many as possible join the ranks of his damned side and not go to god as he cannot. What many fail to realize is that the base reason for the treachery and deceit of the devil to encourage evil is that the forces of hell actually desire God and all he represents but they have been denied this joy. For this reason the denizens of hell wish to bring as many as they can away from what they already cannot have as their only real enjoyment.
For some reason though most Christians do not think of heaven versus hell in this way. This version of hell  vs heaven is probably too personal for some because it represents the devil and his demons in a way that reflects human nature and human thoughts. I believe that most devote catholics would prefer not to think of hell in this way however I have always found myself attracted to this concept. Rather than see hell and it's denizens as a total and pure evil and heaven as pure light and goodness I like to think that humans that pass on to either place do not simply lose themselves and become a being of good or evil, rather it would be a paradise or hell in which that person was who they were in life. What would be the purpose of living as yourself and being either a good or evil person and losing that identity of self as soon as you die? These ideas seem in line with what some of the messages of Dr. Faust agreed with and while some may disagree I think that if if god spent the time to create man in his own image why would all that sense of living, learning, loving and dying mean if it was all lost in the end?
